If you want to avoid excessive brake dust, switch to carbon ceramic brake disks.

Kinja'd!!!

Painted drum brakes stop brake dust permanently.

Pun not intended.

Joke intended.

And to think, these people are driving on the same roads as we are.

I’ve seen a maroon Previa with electric blue painted drum brakes and wheels. It was so horrifying I didn’t take a picture.

Sure, I’ll just check my wallet for the spare $10 GRAND IN CHANGE for the upgrade.

If you want to avoid paper cuts, pay with gold coins instead. =) Just messing with you, my friend! When’s your next track day or backroadtrip? Our group is heading to NW Arkansas the 2nd weekend of April - can’t wait!

What’s wrong with painting the drum? All the braking is on the inside and now it won’t rust and look shitty on the outside. Yes I think the colors are tacky, but it makes sense. If I had drum brakes I would paint them black.

That’s one way but gold is pesky in that the purer it is, the higher the rate of malleability. Therefore you would have to be quite careful with it. Not to mention it is quite a bit heavier than paper bills. It would look quite alluring for you to pull out gold coins though. Haha

I have a track day planned for the end of the month at COTA and am considering doing VIR sometime in later in the year.

As far as what has happened since we last talked, I’m officially retired and we’ve moved to our ranch in the hill country. Also, we’ve trimmed the fleet considerably as the Turbo S, 12C, and both GTs have all found new owners. It was though to let the GTs go but I hadn’t used them in a good while and felt that they deserved better. In addition, I knew both buyers and am confident that they will care for them properly while also exercising them regularly.

What part of Arkansas is your group visiting?

Very jealous of your planned COTA and VIR events. Hearty congrats on your retirement! Well deserved. I’m sure your cars will bring as much enjoyment to their new owners as they brought to you. It says quite a lot about the 918 that you decided to keep it while letting all those other great cars go! Very nice to know the new owners so that you can “visit” your old friends in the future.

We’ll probably stay in Eureka Springs or maybe find a cabin north of there somewhere, but we’ll be making good use of all the great roads north of I-40 and west of Hwy 65.

Thank you, my friend. It’s been a long time coming but I just felt it was the right time in many ways.

You know, it really does. A while ago Mac asked me if I was interested in any of the 3 hypercars (P1, LaF, 918) and I said no because they didn’t provide the excitement of my old Carrera GT. However, I kept seeing more and more media about all of them and my interest became piqued. Then, as luck would have it, I stumbled upon my 918 and it was specced absolutely perfectly and, on a whim, I decided to purchase it. The rational being, I could have some fun with it and if I ended up not liking it, I could just resell it with little or no lose. However, to my surprise, I actually loved it. Maybe it’s due to my age but I actually fell in love with this fairly heavy (by hypercar standards), 4-wheel drive, hybrid machine. It’s nowhere near as involving, good looking, or aurally pleasing as the CGT but that’s ok because I also don’t feel that I’m on the razor’s edge all the time. In short, the 918 provides about 85% of the excitement of the CGT with about 15% of its heart attack inducing characteristics and at my age that seems to be the right combo of the two.

Sounds like a fun trip. I look forward to photos!

Fewer heart attacks are preferable! I actually prefer the design of the 918 to the CGT, and while the new V8 sounds pretty mean, it’s nearly impossible to beat the primal howl of the old V10. I bought myself a 917/CGT shift knob replica for my desk at work. =)

Haha. They are indeed. I’d like to be here bit longer.

Yes, the 918's exhaust note is tremendous but just not quite as good as the CGT’s.

That’s great. I’m sure it’s a beautiful piece of work.

Are you going to exercise your option on the 911 R? =)

Kinja'd!!! CAcoalminer > davesaddiction @ opposite-lock.com

Kinja'd!!!0

That’s actually a complicated situation because I bought my 918 used. My Porsche dealer, that I’ve been with for years, offered me an option on the R and assured me that they could get me an allocation if I wanted it but I turned them down. First of all because I’d rather those who took the risk by buying a 918 from the factory to reap the rewards from it. In addition, I would rather not put them in a situation where they might get in trouble for giving a preowned 918 owner preference over a new 918 owner. That said I do appreciate their loyalty.

Now, if Porsche was to put the GT3's motor in a Cayman/Boxster...

Ah, yes - I didn’t consider that. Noble of you to reward loyalty with loyalty.

Haha, what a beast that would be! I think a GT4 would be sufficient for me (or more realistically, a Cayman GTS). I’m just glad to see the Porsche faithful voting with their wallets to convince the mothership that it’s in their interest to continue to offer manual transmissions across their sports car lines.

It is nice to see that Porsche is being responsive to its owners’ desires.
